Release notes
What changed in each version of SessionHUD. If a release fixes something that put a wrong number on a screen, it says so.
1.0.0 — 21 October 2026
The first public release. Requires macOS 15 and Pro Tools 2023.9 or later; tested with Pro Tools 2026.4.
- Take number while recording, read from the file Pro Tools creates. If SessionHUD can’t tell which take it is, it shows a dash rather than guess. The last take stays on screen after you stop, and before your first pass SessionHUD shows the latest take already in the record folder. Arm or rename a different track and it starts over from that track’s own takes — once the take being recorded has stopped: rename the track mid-take for the next line and the take on screen, and the track you picked, stay with the recording.
- Elapsed take time, timed from the moment each take starts recording. The Timer preset makes it the headline.
- The date and time of day in any layout — 24- or 12-hour, with or without seconds, and the date in four styles — from Insert Data ▸ Date & Time.
- A countdown in the Metadata window, to a time of day or for a length of time, with Start, Stop and Hide, for a break or the end of the session.
- Four outputs: a floating HUD over Pro Tools, a full-screen display for the booth, a browser page any computer or tablet on your network can open, with a read-only feed for Companion and tally lights, and a virtual camera for Zoom, OBS and other video apps.
- Ready-made layouts: Simple, Normal, Detailed, Timecode, Banner, Timer and Talent on every screen (Banner isn’t offered on the full-screen display), plus two on every screen but the virtual camera: Lamp, a big take number with a transport light, and Clock & Take, the take with the time of day beside it and the date under it. Each layout has its own color profile and typeface. No license needed.
- Camera layouts: the live camera with a HUD across it, or your camera in a box on a backdrop with cards around it. Ready-made cards for the take, the transport, the timecode, the talent and more — up to eight in one picture, each with its own colors, background and border, and labels in your own words. A backdrop color, a color or gradient of your own, or an image behind them; a mirror for the camera, and Framing for a close-up of the talent at up to twice the zoom, set by hand or with Frame the Talent; and Standby Mode: turn the camera off and the call sees a full-frame take display, never a frozen picture.
- Layout designer license required: edit a preset or a copy of one, for the screens and the camera, with layers, locking, and export and import to take a layout to another room. You can look around it, but not edit, during the evaluation.
- Facility branding license required: your studio’s logo on any output, saved inside the layout so it goes wherever the layout goes.
- MTC timecode, optional, which dims when the timecode stops arriving.
- A 14-day evaluation with every output working and no sign-up. The menu bar menu and the designer show the days left, and if the last day ends mid-take, the outputs keep running until you stop recording. Starting it sends an anonymous ID for this Mac (we also note its country and region), and nothing about you or your sessions.
- Your account page, opened from an emailed link with no password: your serial, receipts, the latest download and the Macs your license is on. Add a Mac, manage or cancel a subscription, or revoke a lost Mac.
- Three ways to pay, per Mac: a monthly or yearly subscription that includes every version, or a perpetual license that includes every 1.x release. The License window shows your plan and, if you’ve canceled, when the subscription ends on this Mac.
- Perpetual licenses work offline once activated, behind a firewall too. Moving one to another Mac needs the internet on the old one, or a revoke. A subscription Mac released while it’s offline gives you a release code to enter on your account page from any device.
- Automatic update checks that ask before installing anything, and list what’s new in the update. Turn them off in Settings ▸ General.
- Diagnostics shows the Pro Tools connection, the folders being watched, and how the current take number was worked out — confirmed or a best guess. A copied log leaves out names and file paths unless you choose to include them.
Versions and updates
SessionHUD offers each new version in the app and asks before installing it. A subscription includes every version; a perpetual license includes every 1.x release. See Updates in the manual.
