Support
The guides below cover setup. The questions below them are the ones that come up. If neither has it, email support@sessionhud.com — there is no ticket portal and no chatbot.
Your account
Your serial number, the current download, your receipts and the Macs your license is on are all on your account page. Enter the address you paid with and we email you a link. It works once, for 24 hours, and opens a private 30-minute session. There is no password. Straight after buying you need no link: checkout takes you to your account, serial first.
Guides
Start with the manual. The virtual camera guide has the steps for each video app.
- Manual — installing, connecting to Pro Tools and uninstalling, every feature, and a settings guide that follows the windows in the app.
- Virtual camera — setting it up, choosing SessionHUD as the camera in Zoom, Teams, Meet, OBS and QuickTime, the video app effects that have to be off, camera layouts, and what the camera shows when you turn it off.
- API — what Bitfocus Companion, tally lights and scripts can read from SessionHUD, with examples.
- Release notes — what’s new in each version.
- Privacy — what stays on the Mac, every request it makes to us, and what we keep and for how long.
Common questions
Do I have to install anything into Pro Tools?
No. Nothing goes inside Pro Tools or your sessions; SessionHUD runs alongside it. To uninstall it, choose SessionHUD ▸ License… ▸ Release This Mac, remove the camera in File ▸ Diagnostics ▸ Remove Camera Extension…, then quit and drag SessionHUD to the Trash. The manual has the steps.
Does SessionHUD need the internet?
Only for a moment, to start the evaluation and to activate; allowing
api.sessionhud.com through a firewall is enough. After that a
perpetual license works offline indefinitely. A subscription
needs to connect once every 30 days, and around each renewal. If a license ends or is revoked mid-take, SessionHUD waits
until you stop recording. Update checks can be turned off in Settings ▸ General ▸ Updates.
What if my Mac is lost or stolen?
Open your account page through an emailed link and choose Revoke lost or stolen Mac. Its seat is freed immediately and that Mac cannot reactivate with the serial. Because a lost Mac usually carries its serial with it, revoking one also replaces the serial: the new one is emailed to you and your other Macs keep working. The lost Mac stops the next time it reaches the internet; a Mac on a subscription also stops when its offline authorization runs out, within 30 days. A Mac on a perpetual license that never connects again never hears of the revocation — the seat is still freed. You can revoke one Mac a year from the account page; if you need to revoke another within the year, write to support@sessionhud.com. Contact support too if you recover the Mac and need it unblocked.
An update broke something. Can I go back?
Yes. Open your account page and choose Previous versions: every released version is there, and your serial works with all of them. Quit SessionHUD, open the disk image of the version you want and drag SessionHUD to Applications, replacing the copy there. When it offers the newer version again, choose Skip This Version. Settings and layouts saved by a newer version may not be readable by an older one; if so, it starts with its own defaults. Please tell support@sessionhud.com what went wrong, so the next update fixes it.
What happens if I cancel my subscription?
Nothing straight away. Cancel from your account page and the subscription runs to the end of the month or year you paid for; the account page and the License window both say when each Mac stops. After that each Mac stops at its next check-in, or at most 8 days later if it is offline, and never in the middle of a recording. Nothing on the Mac is deleted. Sign in to your account page and subscribe again from there, and the same serial comes back, layouts and settings untouched.
Is there a free evaluation?
14 days, free, before you pay anything. Every output works on the built-in presets: the HUD window, a full-screen display, the browser viewer and the virtual camera. Download it and put it on the booth monitor and in tonight’s call; the first launch asks us for the license that runs those two weeks and sends an anonymous ID for this Mac to do it. That, and the country and region the request came from, is all we learn.
A license unlocks your own layouts in the designer and facility branding. It is also what keeps the app running past the fourteenth day: a subscription for as long as it is paid, or a perpetual license, which has no end date at all.
What happens after the 14 days?
SessionHUD stops until you activate a license. The days left are in the menu bar menu all the way through, and if the last one runs out mid-take the outputs wait for the transport to stop. Nothing on your Mac is touched and nothing is deleted — your layouts, your settings and your record folders are exactly where they were, and activating a license brings all of it straight back.
Can I get a refund?
Yes: if SessionHUD doesn’t do what this site says, write within 30 days of buying and we’ll ask Link, which sells it, to refund you. This covers everything except subscription renewals. See Terms.
Why is the take number a dash?
SessionHUD shows a dash rather than guess. Usually nothing has been recorded on the armed track yet, or Disk Allocation has just pointed it at an empty folder. The number appears once the first take stops. File ▸ Diagnostics shows which folders are being read and how the current number was worked out.
The number stayed on screen after I stopped. Is it wrong?
No, it stays up on purpose, so you can play the take back under its number. It goes to a dash while Pro Tools is recording a take SessionHUD can’t identify, and it starts over when you arm or rename a different track.
Does pressing Play advance the take number?
No. QuickPunch and TrackPunch create the next take’s file as soon as you press Play. SessionHUD ignores that until Pro Tools is actually recording, so the booth never sees a take nobody recorded.
Is SessionHUD an Avid product?
No. Fontaine Creative LLC makes it. Pro Tools is Avid’s, and so is Pro Tools support. Nothing here says Avid endorses, certifies or supports SessionHUD.
License and download
Lost the email? Your account above has your serial. If the address you paid with no longer reaches you, write to support@sessionhud.com instead.
New Mac? On the old Mac choose SessionHUD ▸ License… ▸ Release This Mac, then enter your serial on the new one. Free, as often as you like. Old Mac offline? On a subscription, SessionHUD gives you a release code to enter on your account page. On a perpetual license, connect the old Mac once to release it. Old Mac dead or gone? Revoke it from your account page (once a year). This also sends you a new serial.
Two Macs at once — a second room, or a laptop you also record on? That is a second activation, not a second license, and it costs what the first Mac did. On a subscription, raise the number of Macs under Manage billing on your account page. On a perpetual license, add Macs on the same page for what a license costs that day ($99 each at the launch price, $129 after), paid once, nothing to renew. Either way the serial you already have activates the extra Mac. Buying again from this website instead comes with a serial of its own.
Writing to us
Send it to support@sessionhud.com with:
- macOS version and Pro Tools version
- What you expected, what you saw, and whether you were recording
- The log from SessionHUD: open File ▸ Diagnostics (⌥⌘D), press Copy beside Log, and paste it in. Names and file paths are left out unless Include content is on; leave it off unless we ask for them
Do not send session files, audio, or a client’s name in the first message. The take number, and whether SessionHUD called it confirmed or a best guess, are usually enough.
Ideas and requests
SessionHUD is still growing, and what gets built next comes largely from the people using it. If something would make it more useful in your sessions — a value you want on screen, a layout you keep building by hand, a tool you want it to talk to — write to support@sessionhud.com and tell us how you would use it.
